E-file tax returns

More and more entrepreneurs decide to file tax returns electronically through the e-deklaracje system which is free of charge and available at www.e-deklaracje.gov.pl.

The tax-filling system allows both, taxpayers and paymasters, to prepare and electronically file tax returns. For paymasters, in particular those who employ a large number of people, this is certainly a step in the right direction to save their time and money. The system has been already used by the Ministry of Finance and tax administration.
In addition to VAT and CIT declarations, also income statements, information about collected advance tax payments (PIT-11) and annual tax calculations on the taxpayers’ (PIT-40) can be submitted electronically. Last year, enterprises submitted more than two million of electronic PIT-11. Each year, this way to file tax returns is increasingly popular – three years ago there were only 200 000 e-file tax returns. To compare with 2011, statistics from 2012 indicate a further increase in the number of submitted PIT-11. (MF)

Polish scientists will examine da Vinci’s painting

Polish scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń will examine in Florence, Italy, the Leonardo da Vinci’s "Adoration of the Magi" using their own newly developed non-invasive method.

Previously, experts from Toruń have used this method in examining Hans Memling's "Last Judgment" in Gdańsk. Moreover, it has been used also by scientists from France, the USA and Great Britain. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is not entirely new method but it is commonly used, for example, in optical tests. However, this method has been adopted for the first time to study the works of art by the teams of Professor Piotr Targowski and Professor Bogumiła Rouby from the University in Toruń.

The OCT examination allows obtaining information about the object’s structure which is accessible to light. In the case of paintings, OCT is used to study, for example, a layer of varnish or a glaze – a transparent or semitransparent layer of paint spread over the top of a painting which changes the hue of deeper layers. However, it is not the only field in which the OCT method is applied. It is also useful by examination of instruments, objects made of amber, glass or even sand helping conservators assess the degree of object’s destruction and choose an appropriate method of preservation. More on OCT at: www.oct4art.eu. (PAP - Nauka w Polsce)
