INVESTMENTS IN POLAND

New aircraft on the sky of Rzeszów

The Rzeszów University of Technology modernizes its Aviation Training Center (ATC) using EU funds. By the new academic year it will be in possession of five new aircraft. The funds will be invested in upgrading the equipment as well as in new flight simulators.

The Ministry of Regional Development resumed its decision to grant funds for two strategic investments of the Rzeszów University of Technology: acquisition of new aircraft and upgrade of the Aviation Training Center as well as construction of a new and very modern Education and Conference Center. Due to this decision ATC has already acquired three new one-engine “Liberty XL2”. With the help of the EU Programme for Development of Eastern Poland, it is just the first step in ATC’s modernization startegy. By September this year the Centre will acquire two “Liberty XL2” and by the end of 2010 two additional two-engine “Piper Seneca V” will be bought. Not only new planes signal positive changes at the Rzeszów University of Technology. The modernization project envisages also construction of a new aviation center which is expected to include a new runway, new hangars and a room for the new flight simulators.

Before the start of the programme, ATC was equipped with 11 airplanes which had been purchased in the 80s. The new machines rank among the most modern in the world. - These aircraft are equipped in a modern way with the latest solutions that can be found in all new machines around the world. This is a durable equipment and, what is important, consumes little fuel, namely 20 litres per hour - said the chief of ATC, Jerzy Bakunowicz.

Fast - growing “Kielce Silicon Valley”

Kielce Technology Park (KTP) carries out an intensive investment process. A new area for business, which is necessary to accommodate both new and existing innovative companies, is growing fast.

The Kielce Technology Park, located in the north- west part of the city, is not only one of the youngest but also one of the most rapidly developing park initiatives in Poland. In early May 2010 the construction process which will allow to create favorable conditions for enterprise development was initiated. The value of the project is estimated to reach PLN85 mln, including PLN 58 mln from the Operational Programme Development of Eastern Poland 2007-2013.

Funds from the Regional Operational Programme of the Świętokrzyskie region will also allow to create Design Laboratories, so that KTP could implement a comprehensive support program for the design industry in the region. In addition, companies which will establish their activities in the Park, will be provided with preferential rents as well as with broad access to business services. - We managed to save a lot on tender procedures and now we are able to allocate those savings to further development. Not taking advantage of these funds would require us to return the grant to the European Union, a thing we cannot afford. - said Szymon Mazurkiewicz, director of PKT.

The Park has also prepared an offer for companies which currently cannot count on renting space in the park. They may choose an alternative solution - they may enter into co-operation with KTP without physical presence in the Park.

- “The e-incubator project” is a proposal for innovative companies which have already earned their position on the market, but now need a further impetus for development. - said Dominika Kraska, head of Consulting and Technology Transfer Division at KTP.

KTP creative infrastructure will be opened by mid-2011

Biotechnological Cracow

In September 2010 Cracow will host an international biotechnology conference “Central European Congress of Life Sciences Eurobiotech 2010”.

Eurobiotech 2010 is a continuation of a series of conferences which started in 2007 and were devoted to selected branches of biotechnology. The Caracow conference will focus on issues connected with “white biotechnology” i.e. broadly understood industrial biotechnology. The meeting will be attended by representatives of the most important biotechnology centres in Central Europe - both by scientists and businessmen.

- We have numerous centres dealing with basics research. - says professor Józefa Dulaka from the Jagiellonian University. - New companies which work on new drugs are established in the city e.g. Selvita Life Sciences Solutions. Local research teams have been co-operating with companies not only form Cracow but also with centres located in other places. My team has been working on new anti diabetes drugs together with one of companies situated near Warsaw. We already have first very promising tests. - says professor Dulak.

Due to the fact that there is competition in the field, it is very important for Cracow that the conference will be held in the city. Similar aspirations, to become a biotechnology centre in Poland, can also be felt in Wrocław, Łódź, Poznań and Gdańsk. Paweł Błachno claims that thanks to joint efforts of the city's administration and local academic institutions Cracow stands a good chance of becoming such a centre and a leader in the field of life science in this part of Europe.

Bolek, Lolek, Tola and Reksio in the Poland Pavillion on EXPO in Shanghai

There are many children among visitors to the Poland Pavillion at the World Exhibition in Shanghai. It is particularly them who like talking to the Polish dragon - an interactive, paper-cut figure, who teaches them songs or basic Polish words, familiarizing the youngest with our country. Another attraction dedicated to them are Saturday and Sunday film mornings. Every weekend the “Animated history of Poland” gives way to the cartoon characters - Bolek, Lolek, Tola and Reksio.

Specially prepared entrance tickets disappear in split second. Young, mainly Chinese, audience reacts enthusiastically to the adventures of Bolek and Lolek shown on a wide film screen. A scene which reminds us of the interest the characters aroused among Polish children and later on among the international audience. It is worth remembering that the characters in the English version are known under the names of Jym and Jam or Bennie and Lennie.

Reksio, on the other hand, with his cheerful character bears resemblance to a pair of mice very popular in China - Shuke and Beita. This might be the reason the dog has been applauded every time his advantures are shown in the Pavilion. Both cartoon series are not only similar in that they are equally popular (now also in China) but were created by the same company - the Polish Cartoon Movies Studio in Bielsko-Biała - “Bolek and Lolek” were being screened and produced in 1963-1976 while “Reksio” in 1967-1990.

Visitors of hte Pavilion on a movie morning

Every Saturday and Sunday there are two film mornings organised - one at 10.30, the other - one hour later. Admission is free. Every child between 3 and 10 years old may be accompanied by one adult person. (PAIiIZ)

Hip-hop in the Poland Pavilion

4 000 came to listen to a Polish hip hop performer who was singing in Chinese. Before the concert many Chinese visitors doubted if a Polish singer could really sing in their language. The 4 000 who decided to see it for themselves had the chance to admire linguistic and vocal abilities of the Polish singer who is also known from Chinese movies and television.

Wiktor Inokomis is only 21 but the story of his life could already serve as a ready screenplay. Wiktor is Polish but admits that he feels he is a rather "nonstandard Pole" and this not only results from his exceptional music talent. Wiktor spent the majority of his life - 17 years - in China.

Rap singer Wiktor Inokomis in the Poland Pavilion on Expo

His biggest passion is music. He very early decided that he wanted to be a rap singer and started to organise home concerts when he was 10. He has always created both text and music to his songs. In China Wiktor is known as Taiduocy - what translates into “too many words”. What does his sing about? About life. I try to write texts which would appeal to the majority of the Chinese. In the past I was writing about girls, fast cars and money - i.e. topic most popular among American rap singers. But now I think the Chinese want songs about things they carry inside their souls and I do my best to give them that - says Wiktor.

- I am not a rap fan but the things Wiktor does on the scene are really amasing. I began to move to his music. And we came here twice. - says Lin, a 26 years-old student from Shanghai.

To date Wiktor released to solo records. He performs in hip-hop clubs in Bejing nad dreams about a tour in Poland and a concert with Polish rap singers. (PAIiIZ)
