NEWS Investments in Poland - investments in success The inflow of the foreign direct investments (FDI) reflects the economic situation in the world. It rises in the times of economic prosperity and falls in the time of crisis. But even in the time of global economic slowdown Poland maintained the leading position in terms of investment attractiveness.
In the years 2007-2010 the inflow of foreign direct investments to Poland was in all these years positive. Despite the global crisis, Poland remained one of the most attractive investment locations and according to UNCTAD it has improved its position among the largest EU countries receiving FDI: from the 11th position in 2007 rising to 8th in 2010. In term of the FDI inflow structure in the years 2007-2010, only in 2008 reinvested profits were negative. As a result of the economic crisis foreign companies did not reinvest their profits in the business in Poland but they allocated the savings in the parent companies operating in the markets more affected by the crisis. In 2009 the situation has returned to the state before the economic turmoil - reinvested profits accounted to 42% of the total inflow (40% in 2007). Recently the National Bank of Poland (NBP) again pointed to the trend of transferring profits earned by investors abroad.
Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, however, has not noted fall in investment project. In the first ten months of 2011 the Agency closed already 45 investments worth over 1 billion euros, which will create almost 9 thousand new jobs. The value of the new projects already exceeds the result achieved throughout the whole 2010. In the last 3 years 131 foreign companies supported by PAIiIZ opted for investments worth a total of 2.6 billion euros and employed over 28 thousand people. Among the investors, the Americans, Swedes and French were dominating. The most popular sector was the BPO and R&D, automotive and machinery. 24,5% of the investment value closed by PAIiIZ went to the Lower Silesia voivodeship, 14,5% to Mazovia and 10% to the Wielkopolska region. Over 1/3 of all the investors located their investments in the special economic zones. PAIiIZ’s participation in the investment project in Poland in the years 2009-2011 was 14%. The Agency supported companies such as: Cargotec, Ikea, Pilkington, Goodrich, MTU, Indesit, 3M, Cadbury, ABN Amro, Nordea, HP and Geoban. Currently the Agency services 150 investment projects with a total value of 5,9 billion euros which declare over 45 800 new jobs. The dominated investors come from the USA, Great Britain and China and from the BPO, automotive and machinery sector. UNCTAD predicts that FDI inflow in the world will return to the pre-crisis level in 2011. Meanwhile, the investors are looking for locations burdened with the lowest risk. In the forefront of these countries is Poland. In the latest UNCTAD report Poland took 6th place in the world in terms of investment attractiveness. (PAIiIZ) PAIiZ starts cooperation with Radomsko On September 30th, 2011 the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency signed a cooperation agreement with the City of Radomsko.
The major aim of the agreement is to promote Radomsko and help the city attract more investment projects from abroad. The parties committed themselves to undertake activities which will help the city actively seek investors and provide them with professional services. PAIiIZ will provide help in the process of investment offer preparation, in gathering and providing economic information, in creation of data basis concerning the city's economic environment and in data management. To date the Agency has signed similar agreements with Kielce, Lublin, Rzeszów, Białystok, Olsztyn. Budgoszcz, Koszalin, Krosno, Częstochowa, Zamo¶ć, Szczecinek and Piła. INVESTMENTS IN POLAND Gedia Poland constructed a new shop floor The new shop floor was opened on September 29th, 2011.
The shop floor measures nearly 10,00 m2 and marks the end of the first phase of Gedia’s expansion of its factory in Nowa Sól. The investment was worth EUR 4 million and allowed the company to substantially improve work conditions of its 300 workers. The official opening was attended by Head of the Lubuskie Voivodeship Executive Board, Elżbieta Polak, President of Nowa Sól, Wadim Tyszkiewicz, representatives of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency and the Kostrzyn-Słubice SEZ. Further stages of the factory’s expansion will be implemented in the 4th quarter of 2011 and the 1st quarter of 2012. (Gedia)
Danish investor in Szczecin Eltwin A/S will invest PLN 12 million and create 100 new jobs.
In Szczecin Eltwin will manufacture electronic goods and components for ventilation device. For the first 2 years the company plans to operate in a rented shop floor where it will hire 50 people. After the company builds its own facility of 1300 m2, investor will double the number of hired workers. The project was supported by the Zachodniopomorskie Investor and Exporter Assistance Centre. The Head of the Voivodeship Executive Board, Olgierd Geblewicz informs that another Danish devlopement projects is panned to be established in the region. The conference will be held on October 7th, 2011 in the Sejm RP, and on October 8th, 2011 at the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The leading topics of the conference are: innovation, entrepreneurship, investment and social economy. The conference programme provides lectures, panels discussions and workshops. Spain who is a leader in RES investments is a valuable source of inspiration and examples for Poland. Spanish entrepreneurs active in the field for years have valuable experience and a number of examples of developed projects which they can share with entrepreneurs in Poland. The aim of the Forum is to discuss trends in the development of Polish and Spanish energy power obtained from renewable sources. The meeting will also offer a chance to present active and investor-oriented attitude of regions and the benefits they obtain from the development of this kind of investments. Polish mathematician among the best young scientists in the EU Last Tuesday Michał Mi¶kiewicz, a mathematician from Warsaw, obtained 3rd award in the 23rd EU Contest for Young Scientists organised by the European Commission. The Contest gives students the opportunity to compete with the best of their contemporaries at European level.
Michał Mi¶iewicz now studies mathematics at the University of Warsaw but wrote his contest work while being a student of a secondary school (as required by the contest's regulations). This year’s finals of the EU Contest for Young Scientists - EUCYS were attended by 87 participants from 38 countries - 19 in biology, 8 in chemistry, 14 physics, 8 in IT, 10 in mathematics, 6 in medicine, 3 in social studies and 13 in technology. The first and second award (EUR 7,000 each) were granted to young scientists from Ireland, Lithuania and Switzerland. It was the 17th time a representative of Poland took part in the contest. To date there were 37 laureates from Poland. Poland ranks 3rd after Germany with 77 laureates and the UK - 40 awarded projects in terms of the number of rewarded projects in the contest. Elimination for the next edition for the contest have already been inaugurated.
