NEWS Multisectoral trade mission of Polish companies to Rio de Janeiro The Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ) organises a multisectoral trade mission to Rio de Janeiro from June 13th to June 17th, 2011.
The mission offers opportunities to establish economic contacts and enter in cooperation with Brazilian partners. Participants will take part in a Polish - Brazilian economic Forum which will be followed by a match-making session. Moreover, entrepreneurs will have the chance to visit Brazil Offshore 2011 which will be taking place from June 14th to June 17th in Macaé and during which the Polish Embassy's Trade and Investment Promotion Section in Sao Paulo will have an information stand. Costs of participation in the Macaé-based fairs will not be covered by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency but by participants. Entrepreneurs willing to take part in the mission may obtain subsidy to cover the mission-related costs from the Operational Programme - Innovative Economy 2007-2013, subaction 6.5.1 “Promotion of Polish economy on international markets”. For more information please contact katarzyna.rosinska@paiz.gov.pl. (PAIiIZ) Seminar: Polish-Georgian economic cooperation PAIiIZ organises the seminar on May 10th, 2011 in Warsaw.
The seminar is organised in connection with the visit of an official delegation from Georgia and the second session of the Georgian-Polish Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation. The aim of the visit, the session and the seminar is to discuss development opportunities in the field of economic cooperation and investments. PAIiIZ is convinced that a common platform in the Polish-Georgian economic relations will effectively boost the development of cooperation between the countries. The seminar will take place on May 10th, 2011 from 10:00 to 12:00 at the PAIiIZ Information Centre in Warsaw. RSVP: malgorzata.gelo@paiz.gov.pl. (PAIiIZ) Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia? Who's the best in attracting German projects? What, where and why is most attractive for German investors? First-hand data and opinions on the subject collected from German entrepreneurs were presented by PAIiIZ and the German-Polish Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK) on May 5th, 2011 at the PAIiIZ Information Centre in Warsaw.
What is most important for German businesspersons in the investment decision making process? How the Germans see the economic situation in the region, what is their outlook into the future and what are their investment plans? Which country in Central Europe is the most effective in attracting German development projects? Was it a good or bad decision to locate their projects in Poland?
These and other questions were answered today during a debate chaired by the PAIiIZ President - Sławomir Majman. A general commentary of Poland’s attractiveness on international markets was made by Rafał Baniak - Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Economy. The report “Poland’s investment attractiveness for German entrepreneurs in the context of Central and Eastern Europe” was presented by Michael Kern - Head of the German-Polish Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK). Among panelist who took part in the debate, which followed the presentation of the report, there were: Iwona Chojnowska-Haponik - Head of the Foreign Investment Department at PAIiIZ, Michał Maliszewski PhD - from the University of Warsaw, Robert Bachorski representative of Sitech, Hans Jorg Otto - Head of the Management Board of EL-CAB and Michael Hepp - President of the Management Board of BASF Polska. The AHK report shows that 86% of the surveyed entrepreneurs indicated Poland as the most attractive investment destination in Central Europe. The surveyed businesspersons are optimistic about the performance of their businesses - 70% plan to increase their turnover in 2011 and almost 45% expect growth in export and nearly 43% foresee increases in export to Germany. Upward investment trends find their reflection in the number of German projects run currently by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ). At the moment PAIiIZ negotiates 13 projects from Germany which are jointly worth EUR 363 million while at the beginning of the 2 quarter of 2010 the Agency had only 6 projects from this country.
Data provided by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency shows that Germany keeps its leading position as Poland's major trade partner and one of the major source of foreign investments. German foreign direct investment inflow to Poland in 2009 exceeded the value of investment from all other countries and amounted to EUR2.14 bn what accounted for 21.7% of the overall FDI inflow to the country and 23.9% of FDI from European countries. At the end of 2009 there were 5848 entities with German capital present in Poland and the German FDI stock in Poland reached EUR 20.8 bn. Poland’s political stability, employees’ qualifications, quality of suppliers and the country’s economic situation makes Poland the most attractive Central Europe investment location to German investors! (PAIiIZ) New Base of projects run by Polish communes, towns, regions and enterprises The new PAIiIZ Base of Co-operative Projects gathers information on projects run by Polish communes, towns, regions and enterprises.
The Base of Co-operative Projects is a kind of Internet platform which enables entrepreneurs, representatives of local administration, foreign investors and other interested parties to transfer and get information on possibilities of buying or selling properties, joining in a project, and provides information about projects run in the framework of public-private partnership. All the interested parties are invited to register and publish their offers on www.paiz.gov.pl/investment_offers. (PAIiIZ) Baltic Business Forum From April 27th to April 29th, 2011 politicians and businesspersons met during “Europe: North, East - Business without Borders" organised for the third time in Świnoujscie - Heringsdorf.
The Baltic Business Association, the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, the City Council of Świnujście, the Head of the Zachodniopomorskie Management Board organised a meeting for representatives of business, politics and administration.
The Forum’s opening ceremony was attended by: Aleksander Kwaśniewski - former Poland’s President, Waldemar Pawlak - Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of the Economy, Sławomir Majman, President of PAIiIZ, Olgierd Geblewicz - Head of the Zachodnipomorskie Voivodship Management Board, Piotr Krzystek - President of Szczecin, Jacek Piechota - President of the Polish-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce and founder of the Baltic Business Forum; and Dariusz Rosati - Head of the Baltic Business Forum.
This year the Forum focused on European matters and the European dimension of cooperation within the framework of the Eastern Partnership and the Northern Dimension. “Business without borders” translates into creation of a user-friendly political, legal, financial, ecological and media infrastructure. (PAIiIZ) INVESTMENTS IN POLAND BSH Sprzęt Gospodarstwa Domowego invests in Łódź The concern increases production of clothes dryers in Łódź.
BSH wants to invest PLN 80 mln and create 20 jobs. This will be the company’s third development project located in the Łódź Special Economic Zone. The concern was granted two business activity permissions in the SEZ in 2004 and 2010. To date the company has spent PLN 267.5 mln on its Łódź-based factory where the concern generated around 400 jobs. BSH's investment projects in Łódź attracted the concern's subcontractors to the zone e.g. Coko Werk, Wirthwein, Hirsch Porozell, HSV, Drahtzug Stein, Mecalit, Schaumplast Organika, E.G.O. and Hutchinson. BSH’s subcontractors have invested around PLN 400 million and created 1630 jobs. (Łódź SEZ) Metsä Tissue chooses Krapkowice as location for EUR55 million manufacturing investment - This is our biggest factory project in the history of our company - emphasises Hannu Kottonen, president of the Metsä Tissue Group.
The project envisages construction of two modern machines for paper production; a new, ecological gas heat and power plant; a processing workshop, a warehouse and modernisation of one of two Metsä Tissue machines located in Krapkowice. Opening of the new factory, which should start working by mid 2013, will not only increase the company’s output capacity by 35 thousand ton but will also expand the profile of the company's clients. Metsä Tissue is a leading provider of a full range of toilet and facial tissues, household towels, tissue handkerchiefs, and napkins in Europe. The company ranks also among world leading producers of greaseproof papers. The investor has factories located in Finland, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Sweden. The company hires 3200 people and its revenues in 2010 amounted to EUR940 mln. Metsä Tissue forms part of the Metsaliitto Group. (NTO) Grupa B4 expands its activities in the Płock Technology Park Thanks to the permission from April 28th Grupa B4 will construct a new production facility.
The investing company declares to create 200 new jobs and locate the facility in the zone No 3 of the Płock Industry and Technology Park on a 2.3.ha plot. The facility is estimated to cost PLN23 mln. There are plans of introducing an innovative technology which could contribute to the expansion of the company's operations in the Park. (PPPT) MACROECONOMIC POLAND

III European Economic Congress The European Economic Congress 2011 (EEC), held from May 16th to 18th 2011 in Katowice, is one of the most important business events in Central Europe.
For three days Katowice becomes a place of discussion of several hundred debaters: people of politics, business, science and economy. The Organizing Committee - Patronage Council is in charge of the merits and the organizational shape of the Congress. Its Honorary Head is Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament, who always constitutes an essential guarantee of high level of the event. The leading topic of the next Congress will be competitive European economy. Together with panelists and guests we will reflect on what actions have to be undertaken, which processes need to be launched, which priorities we should focus on so that European economy can compete successfully with the most expansive economies of Asia and both Americas. The crucial aspect competitiveness is the question of institutional reform of the EU which needs to function more efficiently and effectively. New EU order is opening another scope of Congress topics - covering problems of public finance, new EU budget perspective, processes of stabilization of EU members economies. Among subjects of the European Economic Congress 2011 you can also find points connected with climate and energy package and its impact on economy, the future of power industry and common EU energy policy, competitiveness of traditional industrial sectors, innovations, relations industry - science and links between development of economy, regions and cities. Problems of Central and Eastern Europe region will be a subject of separate discussion this year. The Congress will be held almost on the eve of taking over the presidency of the Coucil of the European Union by Poland. On the one hand, it enhances guests’ interest in Poland and in participation in the Congress, on the other one, it creates a natural need of introducing priorities of Polish presidency into the scope of topics.
