ANALYSES AND REPORTS

How to stimulate innovations in Poland - NBP report
The basic factors of the Poland’s fast economic growth - the accumulation of capital and increasing employment - are almost drained, experts of the National Bank of Poland (NBP) say in their recently published report regarding the innovative potential of the Polish economy. They also argue that only increase of innovativeness on the national level can boost the productivity in Poland in the future.

Innovation allows both: the company and the state to achieve high productivity and profitability. Meanwhile, authors of the report note that the level of innovation in the Polish economy is relatively low. The survey shows that innovation process in Poland is provided by few manufacturing sectors as well as companies focused on export and those with foreign capital. Speaking of foreign capital, the report describes foreign investment as a “transmission belt” of new ideas and technologies to companies and their subcontractors as well as to the whole country. However, the transfer of knowledge strictly depends on the "absorption capacity” of the country, including the level of education of the society, the experts argue.

Among the factors responsible for the level of innovation in Poland, the NBP's authors mention the specificity of innovation. New ideas often have the characteristics of the so-called "public goods". It means that they can be simultaneously used by many entities. Therefore, Poland should establish a good and flexible system of intellectual property protection, adapted to the level of development of the country. Examples from other countries proves that such system indicates delivering new ideas and in turn the economic growth of the whole country.

Basing on the experience of the most innovative economies, the experts say that Poland should establish a long-term strategy of promotion of innovations that will lead to the creation of innovative-friendly environment in the country. It should consist of proper infrastructure, social capital and well-tailored education. Innovations are not invented by a particular companies. They are a result of a cooperation of many parties - entrepreneurs, universities and public institution”, conclude the NBP expert”.

DID YOU KNOW...?

Poland as a world leader in hologram production
Holograms can be found on notes, credit cards, CD cases, labels and excise stamps. It seems that one, small Polish companies from Warsaw has cornered the market of producing devices for making holograms.

How Poland has become such a strong player on hologram market? It all started in the 20s when brilliant Polish physicist and a student of Albert Einstein professor Mieczysław Wolfke discovered the phenomenon of holography and developed its theoretical foundations. Then, the hologram technology was developed by Hungarian scientist Dennis Gabor, who in 1971 was awarded a Nobel Prize in recognition of his contribution to holography.

Now, almost a century after Wolfke invention, Polskie Systemy Holograficzne, a Warsaw-based company as one in the few in the world produces a unique laser machines to carve hologram matrix - an intricate pattern on the surface of a glass plate covered with a photosensitive layer. It is essential to manufacture any holograms. The company has clients worldwide, mostly in India and China.
