Poland - Thailand
Poland - Thailand Business forum took place on 4th July in Warsaw. The official opening of the forum was attended by Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Janusz Piechociński. The event was organised by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ) in cooperation with the Royal Thai Embassy in Poland.

It was the first Thai Prime Minister visit to Poland.

During the meeting representatives of both countries declared the intention of strengthening economic cooperation in agriculture, energy and tourism. Documents of cooperation were signed between Polish Agency for Enterprise Development and the Department of International Trade Promotion, Polish Chamber of Commerce and Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking of Thailand, as well as between Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency and Thailand Board of Investment.

After the official opening and speeches by representatives of Polish and Thai governments, B2B meetings were organised between companies from food, automotive, energy, construction and tourism sectors.

In 2012 Poland-Thailand trade amounted to USD 730 million, which means that Thailand was Poland’s second main trade partner in the Southeast Asia. (PAIiIZ)

Food from Eastern Poland promoted in the US
Representatives of Polish food companies from Eastern Poland took part in Summer Fancy Food Show in New York from June, 30 to July, 2 and presented their products on a 100-meter Polish stand.

Potential contractors and distributors interested in cooperation with Polish food companies had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the offers of companies from the confectionery, dairy, meat, alcohol, processed fruit and vegetables, and frozen ready products sector.

At the Polish stand there was also a group of representatives from Trade and Investment Section of the Polish Consulate General in New York, presenting offers of other Polish companies.

Participation in the show was organised by Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency within the Eastern Poland Economic Promotion Programme, Development of Eastern Poland Operational Programme, Measure I.4 Promotion and Co-operation.

IBM will develop a Center of Advanced Studies at Gdansk University of Technology
On 3rd July IBM Polska and Gdansk University of Technology have initialed an agreement on creating a Center of Advanced Studies at Gdansk University of Technology.

On 3rd July IBM Polska and Gdansk University of Technology have initialed an agreement on creating a Center of Advanced Studies at Gdansk University of Technology.

Center for Advanced Studies on Campus (CAS on Campus) is a Center for Advanced Technologies created at a university, aimed at cooperation with IBM CAS both on scientific as well as on business level.

The task of the Center will be to educate students, PhD students and research workers at Gdansk University of Technology and increase the attractiveness of the university in the higher education market.

It will be possible thanks to using IBM products in laboratories and classes at Gdansk University of Technology. Both partners will also be obtaining financial resources for jointly executed research based on separate contracts signed by the consortium.

According to the signed agreement, for educational and research purposes IBM will ensure software and experts from the area of solutions used for protection over CAS, as well as trainings concerning competencies developed in the Center.

Lodz Interdisciplinary School of Innovation
With a view to young, creative inhabitants of the city of Lodz on the 4th July an agreement between Lodz Regional Park of Science and Technology, Lodz University of Technology and Technology Transfer Center at Lodz University of Technology has been signed.

The document concerns the construction of Interdisciplinary School of Innovation aimed at waking up the potential of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Participants of the project will have the opportunity to create their own spin-offs and start a business in the new BioNanoPark center, where a special zone is being created for the Lodz University of Technology. The initiators assume that students as well as academics and citizens of Lodz with their own, innovative and creative business ideas will take part in the project. Participants shall be divided into teams of engineers, medicals, lawyers and marketers. In the first part of the project the participants will take part in different kinds of company establishment and management trainings. In the second part innovations should be created. The best ideas will be realised with the assistance of Business Angels in BioNanoPark located in Lodz Park of Science and Technology. Finally selected undertakings should have a great chance for a market success.

”Lodz University of Technology Zone“ will be created in Lodz Park of Science and Technology for the best participants of the project in order to provide them with good environment for the development of the spin-offs.

INVESTMENTS IN POLAND

PAIiIZ acquired 8 new projects
Eight new projects, thanks to which almost 1700 new jobs could be created, were placed on the PAIiIZ investment project list.

The Agency is currently working on 157 investment projects with a total value of EUR 4097 million, which could create 29,185 jobs.

The most popular countries are: the United States (41 investment projects with a total value of EUR 852.15 million, which could create 7583 jobs), Germany (18 projects, EUR 422.8 million, 3220 jobs) and China (15 projects, EUR 382.5 million, 3343 jobs). These countries are followed by Great Britain (9 projects), Switzerland (8 projects), Japan and Sweden (7 projects each).

The most popular branches are: BPO (41 projects, EUR 39 million, 9637 jobs), automotive sector (21 projects, EUR 1292.5 million, 6554 jobs), B&R (13 projects, EUR 12.64 million, 1449 jobs), food sector (8 projects, EUR 309 million, 1175 jobs) as well as ICT, machines, electronics, logistics and packaging (7 projects each).

PAIiIZ has already closed 28 projects this year, with a total value of EUR 610.6 million, which will create 8443 new jobs.

New investment in Lodz
Infosys BPO Poland has received a permission to start economic activity in Lodz Special Economic Zone.

Infosys BPO Poland Sp. z o.o. is a company specialized in business process outsourcing (BPO). The center delivers services to external customers in 284 countries. The company is specialized in delivering services from sectors such as finance and accounting, purchasing, logistics management processes, database management, SAP processes, as well as consulting. Infosys currently hires 1700 persons in Lodz.

The investor is planning to develop the existing center by enlarging its office space, increasing the employment and expanding the existing technical department. Infosys will hire at least 260 new employees by the end of September 2013.

Colgate to expand the factory in Swidnica
Colgate-Palmolive begun the expansion of the factory in Swidnica in the beginning of July.

After completing the expansion, the plant will produce mouthwashes and the production of toothpaste will rise by 30%. The factory in Swidnica will thus obtain a strategic role in Europe. By the end of 2015 Colgate will invest at least PLN 102.5 million and hire at least 80 new employees. However the level of the investment may be higher, as the investor proved earlier.

Colgate-Palmolive toothpaste factory in Swidnica was officially opened on 1st July 2008. The company declared to employ at least 400 people and invest around PLN 160 million. However the factory currently employs more than 600 people, and the company allocated more than PLN 400 million to invest in Swidnica. According to the plan the construction work should end until mid-2014. The halls currently occupy about 35 thousand square meters.

The 6th European Economic Forum - Lodzkie 2013. "W centrum Polski, w centrum Europy" (In the heart of Poland, in the heart of Europe)
The 6th European Economic Forum - Lodzkie 2013. W centrum Polski, w centrum Europy (In the heart of Poland, in the heart of Europe) will be held between 13th and 14th November.

The event is organised by the Marshal’s Office of the Lodzkie Region under the patronage of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency.

The main topic of the Forum is modern business services sector and its influence on investment attractiveness of Polish regions.

Participants of the Forum will raise the questions of steering the economy toward the potential of regions and its influence on the condition of Polish economy.

Discussions during the Forum will focus around BPO/IT branch, its development and benefits for the region and serve as a platform to exchange experience between businessmen.

Days of Grunwald 2013
The biggest history event in Poland will start next week. Like every year, several thousand reconstructors, almost two thousand scouts and several dozen thousand tourists will celebrate the victory on 15th July 1410.

A series of events have been planned within the celebration of the Days of Grunwald between July, 10 and July, 14 2013 in order to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald.

The most important and most interesting attraction will be the inscenization of the battle, which takes place every year to commemorate the battle from 1410.

Two thousand knights from Poland, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, or even the United States will participate in this special history event. The battle is observed every year by more than one hundred thousand spectators.

Apart from the inscenization during the Days of Grunwald there will also be knightly tournaments, film screenings, music concerts, and the International Tournament of Medieval Football Championship “Grundial 2013” will also be organised.

Average wage in enterprise sector higher than last year
According to the Central Statistical Office, average wage in May in enterprise sector amounted to PLN 3699.70. Compared to May 2012 there was a 2.3% increase.

If we look at average wage level as of April 2013, there was a decrease of more than PLN 100, that is from PLN 3831 to PLN 3699.70.

The Central Statistical Office has also observed a decrease of the unemployment rate of half a percentage point, from 14% in April to 13.5% in May 2013.

A company from Gdynia will deliver an underwater hotel to Maldives
Deep Ocean Technology has signed the world’s first agreement for sale and delivery of an underwater hotel called Water Discus.

The recipient of the underwater hotel will be Ridgewood Hotels and Suites Pvt. Ltd. The agreement was signed in the presence of Maldives Tourism Minister Mr Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor on Monday by Arkadiusz Majerski - DOT’s President of the Board and Representative of Ridgewood in Male, Maldives.

The Water Discus will be located next to ZEN Resort on Kuredhivaru Island, Noonu Atoll. The design stage of Water Discus will start immediately after signing the contract. The production stage will be adjusted to the development schedule of Zen Resort.

Deep Ocean Technology is a company based in Gdynia, which combines research capabilities of the best scientists from Gdansk University of Technology and engineering capabilities of Polish maritime engineering companies. The aim of the company is to offer, sell and produce Water Discus - an underwater object which can serve as a hotel, restaurant, Spa center or even as a private residence.

Polish films successful at Karlovy Vary film festival
Polish cinema wins accolades at Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czech Republic.

Tomasz Wasilewski's "Floating Skyscrapers" was selected as the best picture from Central and Eastern Europe and came out as the clear winner of the prestigious "East of the West" competition at the recent 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Other awards also went to Krzysztof Krauze and Joanna Kos-Krauze, both of whom received a special mention for their film "Papusza", which took part in the main competition.

These two important awards are not the only Polish motif at this year's festival. The audience was also treated to such films as "The Girl from the Wardrobe" by Bodo Kox and "Traffic Department” by Wojciech Smarzowski. The main competition's jury was chaired by Agnieszka Holland, who also presented "Burning Bush", her newest three-part mini-series created for HBO. The documentary film jury was also headed by a Pole - Krzysztof Gierat, Director of the Krakow Film Festival.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is one of the most important events on the global cinema calendar. Every year, the Czech spa town attracts tens of thousands of cinema-goers and an A-list of international celebrities. This year's edition was opened by John Travolta, while the Crystal Globe award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema went to the famous American director Oliver Stone.
