Polish quantum software producer enters North America

Poland's Bohr Technology produces software and creates algorithms for quantum computers. The startup was launched in 2017. This summer, it has joined the Creative Destruction Lab acceleration programme in Toronto. Polish Investment & Trade Agency supports Bohr in attracting new customers in North America.

The quantum computers market is a new economic sector. After years of experiments, this innovative technology is now being commercialized. "Quantum computers are the new type of the machines based on a new paradigm – quantum phenomenon. Consequently, they could produce more computational power than traditional computers. In the future, quantum calculations will be able to shorten the calculations time from days to seconds, which drives the investors' imagination" – Witold Krawczyk, founder and CEO of Bohr Technology, pointed out. Potential of this IT sector is impressive. Thomson Innovation estimates that this industry is growing up about 24% per year. As Kowalczyk adds, quantum technology can be used not only to develop artificial intelligence (AI). "Medicine, energy, finance or logistics are sectors where quantum computers can be used to optimise processes and to simulate situation when time is of the essence" – Kowalczyk explains.

Use of the quantum computers in order to solve complex optimisation problems is a niche that Poland's Bohr Technology wants to dominate. "A lot of startups look for different use of quantum algorithms. We chose another way to do this. Our aim is to be a major producer of quantum software by 2023"– Witold Krawczyk declares. The company has already carried out a few joint projects with some corporations in Poland, for example, the Polish Post under Gamma Rebels acceleration programme.

In order to achieve its goals, the company has planned an intense foreign expansion. "The solutions developed by Bohr are of interest especially abroad" – Kowalczyk says. His company wants to explore North America, Israel, Singapore and China – countries that are the world most dynamically growing innovative centres. The first international target of the Bohr's was Canada. According to Kowalczyk, the reason to choose it was the existence of companies developing quantum technology and AI. "Toronto is the „qunatum capital”. It is the homeland of this sector's leaders. Furthermore, this growing market attracts startups developing quantum software and, on the other hand, clients and investors. For us it is a chance to upgrade the know – how and to land new contacts" – Kowalczyk admits.

The Kowalczyk's company has got into the prestigious technology accelator Creative Destruction Lab, where it is taking part in the Quantum Machine Learning Programme, with the mentorship of quantum and AI technology leaders.

At the same time, Bohr Technology starts new business realtionships in the Canadian market. This activity is supported by the Foreign Trade Ofice in Toronto. "We have already found the Bohr's potential clients and investors, for example from automotive and finance sectors. Also, we have helped it to make a contact with them. We want Bohr Technology to benefit from the local support. That is why we try to arrange their participation in different acceleration programme" – Zack Labieniec, Head of the Foreign Trade Office in Canada, says.

The Bohr's Canadian expansion has been so far tremendously effective. "We made contact with major quantum computers producers: D-Wave, Rigetti. We plan the joint publication and research and development actions with Xanadu " – Witold Kowalczyk, reveals.

In autumn, Bohr Technology will be taking part in the Polish Hub, a PAIH coworking space for tech companies in San Francisco, California. By the end of the year, the comany will have visited Israel and Singapore. The local Foreign Trade Offices will be supporting the company in exploring Asian markets.
