ANALYSES AND REPORTS

Lewiatan: Entrepreneurship in Poland is professionalising
Over the last two years, the number of business entities registered in the REGON system increased by 109,000. It shows that entrepreneurship in Poland is not only growing, but it is also evolving and becoming more professionalised - said Ma貪orzata Starczewska-Krzysztoszek PhD, chief economist of the Lewiatan Confederation.

The increase in the number of business entities by 109,000 (by 2.7%) is the result of the growing number of commercial companies with Polish capital from 310,000 to 390,000 entities (the increase by over 25%). Also the number of commercial companies with the foreign capital is rising. It went up from 80,000 to 89,000 (increase by over 10%). Most of them represent capital companies (JSC and LLC).

"It is still not enough, because commercial companies account for only 11.4% of all entities registered in Poland (with 2% of share of companies with foreign capital). However, such dynamic growth in 2 years shows that entrepreneurship in Poland not only is developing but it is becoming more professionalised. Commercial companies have larger scale of operations, higher employment, more professional management and greater financial transparency "- Lewiatan’s expert argues.

The increase of the number of companies was observed in all provinces, including the most developed regions as Mazowieckie, Ma這polska, Wielkopolska, Dolny 奸御k where the growth was the biggest. However, Podkarpackie is reported to be the province with the highest increase in the number of such companies (by almost 30%). It may astonish, as this is one of the regions with the weakest GDP per capita. The survey also shows, that foreign companies recorded even better results in less developed regions. Again, in this category, Podkarpacie is the leader (there were over 550 more foreign companies more, than two years earlier. It is the improvement by 40%). Podlaskie with the increase of 25% was the second while Lubelskie was the 4th. "This shows that the local authorities in these regions are capable to create favourable conditions for the inflow of capital - both Polish and foreign" - concludes Starczewska-Krzysztoszek PhD.
