15 years of BP in Poland

During 15 years of BP presence in Poland the company has always invested in both: business and community.

BP has invested more than USD 800 million in Poland since 1991. It is among the 20 largest Polish firms and employs around 3,000 persons in its five divisions.

Poland’s location at the crossroads of the main communication routes in this part of Europe, creates a high demand for BP products and services. This is a significant factor for BP. The key BP investments in Poland took place in the 1990s. It was then – at the time of the fundamental political changes and the switch to a market economy with free-market rules and competition – that BP decided to build a network of petrol stations and to invest in the fields of liquid propane-butane gas, asphalts production and trade in lubricants and chemicals

BP started its operations in Poland on September 17th, 1991. Initially the Polish operation only consisted of a sales office for automobile and industrial lubricants. The first BP service station in Poland opened on August 5th 1995. In the following years, BP built more service stations, both company-owned and dealer-owned. Currently, BP has the most extensive service station network of all the foreign fuel companies operating in Poland.

BP Poland, with headquarters in Kraków, operates in all regions of Poland in the following sectors:

  • BP Retail
    Service stations
  • BP Gas
Gas cylinders, domestic and industrial gas storage tank installations, LPG, gas bottling plants in Swarzędz, Sąpolno and Sławków
  • BP Bitumen
Manufacture and sales of road asphalt with a factory in Ścinawa
  • BP Lubricants
Grease and lubricant division offering BP, Castrol and Aral products, with its headquarters in Warsaw
  • BP Wholesale and Resale
    Wholesale fuel sales

BP Retail - service stations
The BP Helios mark signifies quality, safety and excellent customer service. BP Retail (the service station division) manages a network of over 300 service stations and 24/7 shops all over Poland. All BP service stations in Poland offer only unleaded fuel, including state-of-the-art BP Ultimate fuels (BP Ultimate 98 and BP Ultimate Diesel). All service stations include a 24/7 shop, and many have automatic and manual car washes. On company-owned stations there are bistros, while most dealer-owned stations include a bar, restaurant or motel for customers. BP customers may participate in the BP partnerclub programme and pay by using the BP Plus card. BP service stations are aesthetically pleasing, conform to the highest technological standards and are environmentally friendly.

BP Gas has operated on the Polish market since 1995. BP Gas has three liquid gas bottling plants in Sławków, Swarzędz and Sąpolno Krajeńskie as well as a terminal with warehouse and distribution facilities at Sąpolno. The first service station with an autogas pump opened in Zakopane on September 4th, 1998. Currently, over 80% of BP service stations sell LPG. In recent years, BP Gas has become a major player in the Polish liquid gas market, and one of the leading companies distributing this fuel nationally. We currently supply around 15% of the Polish LPG market.

BP Bitumen
The asphalt manufacturing division has operated in Poland since 1996. Its key activity area covers the manufacturing and sales of road asphalt modified with thermoplastic elastomers. BP has a bitumen terminal with a modified asphalt manufacturing plant in Ścinawa (Lower Silesia).

BP Lubricants is currently one of the world’s leading specialists in the manufacture of lubricants, greases and fluids. The broad range of products offered by BP Lubricants includes BP, Castrol and Aral lubricants whose characteristics are tailored to the customers’ vehicles: passenger cars, lorries, specialised vehicles and motorcycles as well as many branches of industry.

BP Wholesale and Resale, a new, dynamically developing BP Poland division, started its operations at the end of 2003. Within just three years, owing to intensive efforts and great commitment, we have been able to offer an attractive range of fuels developed for corporate partners that require wholesale supplies of high quality fuels and over 100 Trading Partners from all over Poland have been recruited. We offer products available at fuel depots in all regions of Poland and at the Schwedt refinery in Germany.

Social Responsibility

Wherever we operate, we have three objectives: concern for people, the environment and safety.

Year after year, BP is developing its community and charity programmes together with its trading activities. From the very first day of its presence in Poland, the company started to introduce a corporate responsibility programme by participating in numerous projects and cooperating with organisations that contribute to the harmonious development of communities such as: IBLF, PAH, FOB, Hospicjum sw. Łazarza, TOPR, Szkoła Liderów Społeczeństwa Obywatelskiego, Stowarzyszenie Autokreacja, Fundacja Anny Dymnej i many others.

BP Poland has been among the institutions behind the establishment of the Global Compact Poland, an organisation that implements the initiative of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Poland. The “Global Compact” sets forth 10 responsible business practices.
