Iran and Poland will jointly benefit from the cooperation
According to experts, Poland has ‘moved from the very end to the beginning of the queue’ to the Iranian market. How to take business advantage of the good starting position of our country in Iran? President of the Agency, Tomasz Pisula, and guests of the Polish-Iranian debate, arranged by Rzeczpospolita and KPMG were trying to find the answer to that question.

‘Poland has a very good reputation in Iran’, explained Vahid Tahery, President of the Polish-Iranian Chamber of Commerce. “The country is considered as >>the second Germany<< , the country of high-tech’, Tahery added. Kahev Taghizadeh, partner and head of the Iranian section at KPMG agreed with him. In his opinion, the lack of negative connotations in Iran is the great advantage of our country, whereas in case of many countries that are now entering this Asian state, negative connotation might affect bilateral relations.

Tomasz Pisula: has a hunger for consumer goods

The abolition of sanctions has significantly boosted trade between the two partners. According to the head of the Agency, Tomasz Pisula, Polish exports to Iran increased fivefold during this period. ‘Iran has a hunger for consumer goods. Poland can offer Iran the Western-quality goods at East European prices’, Pisula explained. ‘Both countries will earn a lot on cooperation", he added. Pisula also remained to the audience that there has been a sixfold increase in imports from Iran to Poland since the sanctions were finished. “Usually completing the business in Iran - from contract signing through its implementation, to payment - lasts two years’, Pisula explained. He added that money transfer is one of the biggest challenges in that case.

ANALYSES AND REPORTS

Poland - an outstanding success story
‘Poland moved from middle to high-income status in less than 15 years’, says the new World Bank report ‘Lessons from Poland, Insights for Poland’. The Report addresses two sets of questions: what can other learn from the remarkable transition of our country and what policies could it adopt to continue its ascent.

According to the report, the incomes inequality coefficient - the Gini - did not increase - Poland has one of the lowest Gini coefficients among countries that have become high-income since 2000 - the ‘new high-income countries’. It also has one of the lowest internal regional variations in GDP per capita.

How did Poland achieve this success? After the reforms of the transition from socialism, Poland got the institutions right - the rule of law, property rights, democratic accountability and basic market institutions. Sound macroeconomic policies provided stability and resilience. Such continuity of policy reforms as well as singularity of vision was achieved only by the East Asian Tigers, however Poland got this in the context of vibrant multiparty democracy.

The report also describes Poland as ‘an outstanding economic and development success story’. Poland was the only European country to record positive growth in 2008 and completely avoid a banking sector crisis.

However, Poland’s transformation is bringing a new economic and demographic challenges. Looking ahead, the report provides several insights for Poland, such as making services more client-oriented, resolving the question of aging population, ramping up infrastructure investments.
