ANALYSES AND REPORTS

Wind energy sector in Poland in 2011

On November 9th, 2011 PAIiIZ, TPA Horwath and the law company DZP presented the 3rd edition of a report on the wind energy in Poland.

EU regulations require Poland to produce 15% of all the energy used in the country from renewable resources in the near future. In our geographical location it is wind that creates the greatest conditions to produce energy from renewable sources. That is why the wind energy sector may become one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy.

The overall power of wind farms which were launched in Poland by the end of September 2011 exceeded 1.4 GW. Over 80% of the farms were opened within the last 4 years and the power of installed device has been growing every year. By the end of 2020 the average growth of wind farms is expected to stay at the level of at least 600 MW a year. Investment in the sector may prove very fruitful. At the moment for every megawatt hour of sold energy together with so called green certificate a producer in Poland gets around EUR 110 i.e. almost EUR 20 more than a German producer. On the other hand, the sector still ranks among the high-risk industries due to unpredictable prices and incomes in the field. Among the greatest barriers in the sectors there are complex procedures which concern terms of joining the national electricity system and the assessment of the projects’ impact on natural environment. There is also the issue of the growing social objections against the sector.

The 2011 edition of the report addresses all the issues. The report was prepared by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, TPA Horwath and the law firm DZP under the patronage of the Polish Wind Energy Association. (TPA Hotwath)
