Polish projects conquer China

Chinese firms and institutions are interested in entering in co-operation with Polish designers. The most outstanding projects by Polish designers were presented in the Poland Pavilion on Expo between May 24-26 by the Warsaw-based Institute of Industrial Design. Seminars devoted to Polish design attracted numerous Chinese visitors.

Seminar organised by the Institute of Industrial Design on May 24th -26th
in the Poland Pavilion on Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Due to the fact that China has been the largest world production area, Chinese design institutions aim at matching designers with producers. - There are possibilities of development for Polish designers here - thinks head of the Institute of Industrial Design Ms Beata Bochińska. - The creative industries and Polish design as well as the co-operation of designers and producers in Poland has not been fully appreciated. Here it turns out that it can be a very attractive export product - says head of the Institute of Industrial Design.

Beata Bochińska stresses that in today’s world mass production does not automatically translate into low quality. - It does not really matter if things are manufactured in mass production process or are highly customized. Designing products for mass production is reasonable. In Poland we do understand the concept of democratic design because we have always had rather poor buyers what made us design things which would cater for the “lower quality needs” - now this ability proves very useful on the global design market - adds Ms Bochińska.

The aim of the seminar was to showcase the modern Polish economy and Polish cities in the context of the creative industries and national design, to expand on the idea of boosting companies’ competitiveness through modern design which was based on a set of good practices gathered in Polish companies, to promote works of recognised Polish industrial designers and their methods of work. One of the major purposes behind the meeting was to create a possibility to establish contacts between Polish and Chinese business which could explore the potential of the industrial design.

In May the Poland Pavilion hosted an exhibition "Added Value - World Design from Poland". The exhibition presented products and a series of original multimedia presentations showcasing the best Polish products classified in seven thematic categories focusing on the strongest sides of Polish design. The categories include: tradition, industrial potential, aesthetics, engineering, universal design, ergonomics and digital technology. The exhibition presented a complex spectrum of the Poland's design potential - including services, products and their application possibilities as well as answers to such questions as : What is design today? What added value may the design product bring? What are the benefits of design and co-operation with designers? Why is Polish design world-class and what does it mean?

Jerzy Buzek in the Poland Pavilion on EXPO 2010

The way Poland promotes itself on EXPO in Shanghai appeals to Chinese people - said Jerzy Buzek, a former Poland’s Prime Minister. Mr Buzek and the European Union's ambassador to China, Mr Serge Abou, visited the Poland Pavilion at Expo 2010 on May 29tht, 2010.

Jerzy Buzek in the Poland Pavilion

According to Jerzy Buzek, the Polish display skillfully links elements of Polish history with modernity. “Our difficult past, constantly improving life standards and promising future- all of this was clearly showcased in the Pavilion. We cannot live without remembering history, but the most important things are ahead of us, in the future and what counts is how we have been developing today” - claims Jerzy Buzek.

The Poland Pavilion is visited by around 30,000 people every day. For the majority of Chinese people, Polish exhibition is the very first contact they have ever had with Poland. Poland’s former Prime Minister thinks that the combination of tradition and modernity is a very good way of bringing contemporary Poland closer to Chinese people.

Earlier, in the European Union Pavilion, the President of the European Parliament participated in the opening of a conference devoted to China and European Union partnership in combating the world economic crisis. The visit to EXPO 2010 in Shanghai was the last point on the agenda of Mr Buzek’s official visit to China, during which he also visited Bejing and Nanking.
